This time of year is always hard for me as well as my fellow landscapers. With the economy the way it is the problem I have is people that aren't licensed taking away work from us that pay are dues. So please people check to see licences and credentials. It will give us a fighting chance to make a living. Do you have that nice stuff in the lawn? Well you need to be careful about just putting chemicals down. That will not fix the problem. There is a time to put down chemicals and that time has to do with when and how. Chemicals should be the last resort. The sign of moss is an indicator that you have low fertility in the soil and a weed will gravitate to that medium. So a weed is any undesirable plant that is were you don't want it. In the Pacific Northwest it rains lot therefore creating an acidic place. For a nice lawn one needs to keep the lawn in a more alkaline state You do this by adding compost, lime, areating, thatching to help it along the way. As an educator one of my goals is to educate the public on how. So please don't be shy I am here to help. Take birds for example. It is 7 am and they are singing outside. In my yard I have many feeding stations. What better way for nature to help you with insects. When pruning not to much now, make little areas for the birds to nest and hide. Make some compost piles. More about that latter. If you use chemicals you do damage to all the good creaturs including yourself! Try to limit your pruning to no more than a third. I see to many times people out there pruning way to much to try keeping it small. It won't work. A plant is programed to get a certain height. Take fruit trees for example. If you prune out the top to much you start to get the umbrella tree.
